Alcoholic Beverage Sea Freight Guidelines

In international ocean shipping, alcoholic beverages must be classified in accordance with the IMO’s International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. If the alcohol content exceeds 24% ABV, the product is categorized as a Class 3 flammable liquid and listed under UN 3065 Alcoholic Beverages, requiring compliant packaging, labeling, and a Dangerous Goods Declaration.
As clarified in Special Provision 145, beverages with no more than 24% alcohol by volume are not subject to the IMDG Code, meaning items like beer, wine, and most low-proof cocktails can be shipped as general cargo. However, spirits such as vodka, whisky, or brandy typically exceed this threshold and must be treated as regulated dangerous goods.
For high-purity alcohol or industrial shipments (e.g., above 70% ABV), the product may fall under UN 1170 Ethanol, which requires stricter packaging and documentation standards.
